River Cruises

There’s something special about seeing Europe from its rivers. I’ll help you find the cruise that fits the way you want to experience it.

European River Cruise Planning Made Simple

River cruises offer a different way to experience Europe—combining scenic sailing, historic cities, and a more relaxed pace of travel. Instead of constantly packing and unpacking or navigating trains between destinations, your ship becomes your hotel.

You move from place to place without the usual travel stress.

With smaller ships and centrally located ports, river cruises make it easier to explore destinations like Vienna, Budapest, and Paris without the crowds or complexity of larger ocean cruises.

As a river cruise travel advisor, I help you choose the right cruise line, itinerary, and excursions so your trip fits your travel style from the start.

Why Work With Me to Plan Your River Cruise

I’m Christina Haney, a CLIA-certified travel advisor and owner of All Aboard Travel and Cruise. I specialize in European travel and cruises, and I’ve experienced European river cruising firsthand. That means I bring both professional training and personal experience to the trips I plan for my clients.

I take the time to learn how you like to travel before recommending a cruise. River cruise lines can look very similar at first, but the experience can be quite different depending on the itinerary, excursions, inclusions, onboard atmosphere, and even the cabin you choose. My job is to sort through those differences and help you find the cruise that actually fits you—not simply the one with the best promotion.

I can also help with the pieces beyond the cruise itself, including pre- and post-cruise stays, hotels, transfers, excursions, and other European travel arrangements. Instead of trying to piece everything together on your own, you’ll have one person helping you look at the entire trip from beginning to end.

Most importantly, I want you to understand what you’re booking and feel confident that you’ve chosen the right experience for you.

River Cruise Planning FAQ

There isn’t one river cruise line that is best for everyone. AmaWaterways is a strong choice for travelers who enjoy active excursions and more choices in each port, while Avalon Waterways is known for spacious Panorama Suites and flexible sightseeing. Viking offers a consistent, destination-focused experience, while Scenic and Uniworld appeal to travelers looking for a more inclusive luxury experience. The best river cruise line depends on your budget, travel style, preferred itinerary, and what you want included in your fare.

The Rhine and Danube are two of the best choices for a first European river cruise. Danube itineraries often include cities such as Vienna, Budapest, and Bratislava, along with smaller towns and scenic stretches of river. Rhine cruises are known for castles, vineyards, historic towns, and destinations in Germany, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Both offer a good mix of scenery, history, culture, and easy sightseeing.

Most European river cruises include your stateroom, onboard meals, Wi-Fi, and at least some shore excursions. Many also include beer and wine with meals, and more inclusive cruise lines may include additional beverages, gratuities, airport transfers, or a wider selection of excursions. Inclusions vary considerably by cruise line, so it is important to compare the total experience rather than choosing a cruise based only on the initial fare.

For the best selection of itineraries and cabins, I generally recommend planning a European river cruise about 9 to 12 months in advance. Popular dates, specialty itineraries, suites, and Christmas market cruises can sell out even earlier. Booking farther ahead can also give you more choices for airfare, hotels, and pre- or post-cruise stays. Last-minute options sometimes appear, but you will usually have fewer choices.

The main European river cruise season runs from spring through late fall. Spring offers cooler temperatures and fewer peak-season crowds, while summer provides long days and warmer weather. September and October are popular for comfortable temperatures and fall scenery. In late November and December, Christmas market cruises offer a completely different experience. The best time to travel depends on the destinations you want to visit and the type of experience you prefer.

The best river cruise itinerary depends on what you want to experience, and that’s something I’ll help you sort through. I’ll compare the routes, ports, time in each destination, excursions, and overall pace to help you find an itinerary that fits the way you want to travel.
As a starting point, think about what excites you most about going to Europe. Are you dreaming about major cities like Vienna and Budapest, castles along the Rhine, French history and culture, or Portugal’s wine country? Once I know what matters most to you, I can help narrow down the options and recommend the river cruise itineraries that make the most sense for your trip.

You can book a river cruise directly, but an experienced river cruise travel advisor can help you compare cruise lines, itineraries, cabin categories, inclusions, excursions, and pre- and post-cruise options. I help my clients look at the entire trip—not just the cruise fare—so we can choose an option that fits their travel style, priorities, and budget before they book.

Yes. If you’re flying from the United States to Europe, I recommend arriving at least two days before your river cruise. That gives you time to recover from jet lag and start your cruise rested instead of spending the first few days adjusting to the time change. It also provides some breathing room in case of flight delays or other travel disruptions.
If your schedule allows, adding even more time before or after the cruise is a great way to explore your embarkation or disembarkation city or visit another destination that isn’t included in the cruise itinerary.
I can help plan that portion of your trip too, including hotels, transportation, transfers, tours, and additional destinations, so your land arrangements connect smoothly with your river cruise.
