Choosing the Right Cruise Line and Ship

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when choosing a cruise is assuming that all cruise lines—or even all ships within the same cruise line—offer basically the same experience. They don’t.


Some ships are built around nonstop activities, entertainment, and nightlife. Others have a quieter atmosphere, more emphasis on food and service, or a stronger focus on the destinations themselves. Even things like ship size, passenger capacity, dining options, and the layout of the ship can make a noticeable difference in how your vacation feels.


I look beyond the itinerary and price when helping you compare cruises. Who are you traveling with? How important is entertainment? Do you want a ship with a lot happening throughout the day, or would you rather have somewhere quieter to relax? Is the ship itself a big part of the vacation, or are the ports your priority?


There isn’t one cruise line or ship that’s best for everyone. The goal is to find the one that’s best for the kind of vacation you want to have.

The right cruise line depends on who you’re traveling with and what you want from the vacation. Some cruise lines put more emphasis on activities, entertainment, and nightlife, while others offer a quieter or more premium experience. Dining, service, ship size, children’s programs, and the destinations themselves can also vary considerably. I help my clients compare those differences rather than choosing a cruise line based on price or name recognition alone.

Absolutely. On some cruises, the ship is a major part of the vacation, while on destination-focused itineraries, the ports may matter more. It’s important to consider the individual ship rather than just the cruise line because ships within the same fleet can vary in size, age, amenities, dining, and entertainment. I look at both the ship and itinerary when helping clients choose a cruise.

For the best selection of ships, itineraries, and cabins, I generally recommend booking several months to a year or more in advance. Popular Alaska and European itineraries, holiday sailings, suites, and cabins for families can benefit from even earlier planning. Last-minute cruise fares sometimes appear, but waiting usually means having fewer choices rather than simply getting a better price.

There isn’t one cabin location that’s best for everyone. Travelers who are sensitive to motion may prefer a cabin lower and more centrally located on the ship, while others prioritize being close to pools, dining, entertainment, or elevators. Location can also affect noise and convenience. I consider both cabin category and location when helping clients choose rather than looking only at whether a cabin has an interior, oceanview, or balcony.

Most ocean cruise fares include your cabin, meals in designated dining venues, entertainment, and many onboard activities. Depending on the cruise line and fare you choose, things like beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities, specialty dining, and shore excursions may cost extra or be included in a package. Comparing what’s actually included is important when looking at the total cost of different cruises.

I strongly recommend arriving at least one day before your cruise, especially if you have to fly to the embarkation port. Flight delays, cancellations, and missed connections can put your cruise at risk if you travel the same day the ship departs. For international cruises, arriving two or more days early can also give you time to adjust to the time difference and enjoy the embarkation city before your cruise begins.

Depending on the destination and your preferences, that might mean a cruise-line excursion, a small-group tour, a private experience, or exploring independently. I also consider practical details such as time in port and transportation when looking at excursion options.

This is especially valuable for European cruises, where you may want to spend several days exploring your embarkation or disembarkation city, but it can also make sense for Alaska and other destinations. I prefer to look at the cruise as part of the entire vacation rather than treating it as a completely separate trip.
